The Good
Algorithms have made big news lately in politics, but why?
Google is famous for using algorithms to help people find specific information on the web. They also educate everyone on how to use keywords in content you want to be found. This is a brilliant solution for connecting consumers to businesses when searching for a product or service. But what if the algorithms were biased? How would it affect results when searching for information on a competitor or political candidate?
|
If you were to google "Donald Trump" or "China virus", could Google deliberately skew results to include negative results? Could they exclude positive results? These are the kind of things inquiring minds want to know and there is a simple way to find out. DuckDuckGo has researched Googles results. "So if you have political leanings one way or another, you’re more likely to get results you already agree with, and less likely to ever see opposing viewpoints. In the aggregate this leads to increased echo chambers that are significantly contributing to our increasingly polarized society."
The Bad
Politics and Business
You've heard the old saying, "it is what it is" right? That's just a cute way of saying you don't have a logical explanation, and when it comes to politics, people feel the way they feel. But unless your business is politics, they just don't mix. Many people won't even discuss politics around friends because it divides us.
As for business and income, you certainly don't want to discourage potential followers or customers, and you don't want your platform to do it to you either! |
The Catch, or should I say the "Squeeze"
Lets say that you're an Influencer or Entrepreneur and have found a platform you really like and are familiar with. What would you do if you followed someone controversial and they were censored or banned? This "someone" may be a politician, and even though you don't participate in the conversation, you still want to be aware of what they have to say. I suspect many of us are guilty of this, but now you have to make a choice or maybe several choices. But wait, you've already given your personal data away so you could use this platform, and you now have 1,000, 10,000 or maybe 100,000 followers or more that took months or even years to foster. Do you give away your data again and start all over? No, not at first. but this is just a mild example of what you may face when your social platform practices censorship. The worse case scenario is that YOUR account is censored, deactivated or deleted, and you lose your followers, your customers, your income, and your business. You've been canceled!
The Fix
Marketing has become much more targeted, with niche platforms that attract different age groups as well as different activities like News, Shopping, Adventure and many others. You may find yourself engaging potential customers from many different platforms and it's critical to reach out where ever they are without becoming dependent on those platforms. There are many choices to build your own website to serve as a refuge for your business in which there is no risk of over zealous fact checkers. The most popular free platforms that serve as your home based business could prove the most expensive if your "free" account is shut down.
The Ugly
Wars are fed with a big helping of propaganda, but people will starve on it.
What if algorithms were designed to intentionally leave out certain keywords from search results?
While there may be good reasons to censor information such as pornography from children, the act of censorship for political reasons distorts the truth. If you can't be trusted to judge information the way a programmer wants you to, they may exclude derogatory information that hurts their cause. I've listed just a few ways below.

Erase history, even if it's only five minutes old:
Burn a book or delete a video. You can't know, what can't be read or seen. Omit search results: Same as above, you can't know, what can't be read or seen. Limit free speech: You know, flag or delete a tweet, or shadow ban someone from their followers. Same as above, you can't know what was posted if you never see it. Just lie: Yes, that's ALWAYS an option. |
Politics is a necessary evil that some platforms still understand and respect freedom of speech,
like Parler, Telegram and Rumble.

Before putting all your marketing eggs in one basket "platform" I highly recommend you take a look at Verb's platform. See catalyst #6 here, and I think Verb is a great investment too.

Washington, DC – On Thursday, Twitter suspended the Job Creators Network (JCN) from its platform, accusing the small business advocacy group of ostensibly “violating [their] rules against platform manipulation and spam.” In reality, this ban is likely retribution for JCN’s implications that the tech giant should be regulated as a utility.
